More Green Areas to Enjoy Near the Smith School
Bill Mayer – In His Own Words
More than a decade ago, when I was dean of the business school, now named the Robert E. Smith School of Business, I felt the area near the school was not as attractive as the rest of Maryland's green campus. I thought if we beautify the area around the school, it would make a big difference in drawing traffic to that part of the campus.
With the newly added North Wing to the Smith School and other new construction in the area, I thought a greenway running from the Smith School to the other parts of campus would provide a place for people to walk, relax and enjoy the outdoors and feel that they're part of the same campus.
So my wife Kathy and I designated that a portion of a $5 million contribution go towards the development of the William E. and Kathy Mayer Mall. Our gift is part of a much larger package of gifts meant to provide leadership to a broader community to help raise the capital to transform this university into one of the very top major universities in the United States and the world.
