Volunteer Touches Maryland from West Coast
Waldo Burnside '49 – In His Own Words
What we are trying to do out here in California is to encourage the involvement of alumni who don't get back to see the university every year, but are still interested in what's going on there. I've hosted a golf tournament with men's head basketball coach Gary Williams as the special guest, and that has been a big boost to our efforts. People remember the athletic events when they were in school, and to have someone who relates to those memories share what's going on now, that really helps build alumni interest.
I got started as a volunteer a few years after joining the Terrapin Club in 1958. You first get hooked in a small way, like that, and then your interest picks up as you see the opportunity to give back something to an institution that had a strong influence on your life. It's very personally satisfying. I've met some great people along the way, and together we've met some great challenges to help the university grow.
